Backyard fun this spring - great outdoor toys for toddlers and preschoolers

Whether spring has sprung or not in your neighbourhood, momstown Finds has recommendations for fun outdoor toys to keep your little ones exploring and enjoying the great outdoors this spring and summer!

spring toys for preschoolers

sandbox walmart

A sandbox is a classic backyard playground that will keep little ones entertained for hours, digging and pouring and sifting. This Step 2 model is available at Walmart and comes with a lid to protect sand from weather and pets. The earth tones fit nicely into the backyard landscape as well!

melissa and doug bubblesTrust Melissa & Doug to make blowing bubbles even more fun with the new Augie Alligator Bubble Saxophone Whistle. Definitely an outdoor toy (for bubble and sound reasons!)

fling toss gameLittle hands can learn to throw and catch with a Flip Toss set (whiffle ball included) that adults can enjoy too! Available at Toys R Us.

boom max paddle ball set

The new range of Maximum BOOM games are at Mastermind this spring and promise to be a new classic. We tested out this paddle ball set with the tethered ball and our kids loved the 'boom!' sound it made when the ball hit the paddle.

target t ball setIf your little ones are eager to join the big leagues soon, what better way to start than with a glove and ball ($8.99) or Tee stand ($11.99) set from Target? At these prices, you don't have to invest much to get their big league dreams started! Check out your local flyer here.

tiff kids digiplayspace and films a hit with momstown kids!

momstown on the move hit downtown Toronto this past weekend to check out the TIFF Kids festival, the digiPlaySpace, and the premiere of the first Canadian 3D animated film, The Legend of Sarila.

tiff kids digiplayspace

Our momstown tester, age 8, went with his grandmother for a full afternoon of TIFF Kids fun - starting with a visit to the new digiPlaySpace at the Bell Lightbox. Billed as an interactive adventure, our kid tester was amazing by the special effects that he got to be part of (including the weather worlds pictured above).

"I got to make tornadoes with my hands and go inside an ice cube - it was so cool!"

Another favourite was the "Be in the Scene!" exhibit where our tester put himself on the "biggest rollercoaster ever!" - and got to experience green screen technology.

gesundheit app

A highlight (that followed our tester home in the form of new app requests!) was the TIFF Kids Appcade, where young visitors can try out a huge range of games, creative tools, and storytelling activities. You can see a full list of apps here - Gesundheit was a favourite that our tester just had to purchase when he returned home. As a mom, I was glad to purchase a Canadian-made app - likely our first!

legend of sarila

The afternoon wrapped up with The Legend of Sarila - Canada's first 3D animated feature - billed as an expansive, gorgeous-looking adventure about youth living in the Arctic tundra. Both our 8 year-old tester and his grandmother loved the film and would recommend to the age 8-13 age group.

See the trailer here:

momstown on the move recommends the TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace and films as a great way to introduce kids to the magic of movies and a great afternoon of entertainment for both parents and kids!
